Man's Search for Meaning by Victor Frankl

  • He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.
    • Man can get used to anything, but don't ask how.
  • Don't Aim at success- the more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it.
  • Those prisoners who gave up on life, who had lost all hope for a future were inevitably the first to die. They died less from lack of food or medicine than from lack of hope, lack of something to live for.
  • Life is not primarily a quest for pleasure or quest for power but a quest for meaning. The greatest task for any person is to find meaning in his or her life.
    • In work by doing something significant
    • in Love by caring someone
    • in courage during difficult time.
  • Suffering in and of itself is meaningless; we give our suffering meaning by the way in which we respond to it. We are never left with nothing as long as we retain the freedom to choose how we will respond.
  • Man's inner strength may raise him above his outward fate.
  • The man, whose self-esteem had always depended on the respect of others, is emotionally destroyed
  • Life is meaningful and that we must learn to see life as meaningful despite our circumstances.
  • Man is that being who invented Auschwitz Gas chambers, however, he is also that being who entered those gas chambers upright.
  • Honor thy father and thy mother that thy days may be long upon the land.
  • Delusion of Deprive
    • the condemned man, immediately before his execution gets the illusion that he might be reprieved at very last minute.
  • Love is the ultimate and the highest goal to which man can aspire. The salvation of man is through love and in love. Love goes very far beyond the physical person of the beloved. Love is as strong as death.
  • Humor, more than anything else in the human make-up can afford an aloofness and an ability to rise above any situation. Thus develop sense of humor. The attempt to develop a sense of humor and to see things in a humurous light is some kind of a trick learned while mastering the art of living.
    • you should invent one amusing story daily.
  • There is a meaning in life, there must be a meaning in suffering. Suffering is and ineradicable part of life, even as fate and death. Without suffering and death human life cannot be complete.
  • Those who find opportunities in their difficult times are the only one who are worthy of his sufferings. A man who let himself decline because he could not see any future goal found himself occupied with retrospective thoughts. It is just such an exceptionally difficult situation which gives man the opportunity to grow spiritually beyond himself.
  • It is a peculiarity of man that he can only live by looking to the future. The person who had lost faith in the future, his future was doomed.
  • What was really needed was fundamental change in our attittude toward life. We had to learn ourselves and furthermore, we had to teach the despairing men, that it didn't really mattere what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life- daily, hourly, and secondly.
  • Those thing which doesn't kill me, makes me stronger. What you have experienced, no power on earth can take from you.
  • No one has the right to do wrong, not even if wrong has been done to them.
  • Man's search for meaning is the primary motivation in his life and not a secondary rationalization of instinctual drives. Man, however, is able to live and even die for the sake of his ideals and values.
  • What man actually needs is not a tensionless state but rather the striving and struggling for a worthwhile goal, a freely chose task.
  • Meaning of life differs from man to man, from day to day, and from hour to hour. There is a specific meaning of a person's life at a given moment. Each situation in life represents a challenge to man and presents a problem for him to solve
  • Live as if you were living already for the second time and as if you had acted the first time as wrongly as you are about to act now.
  • No way suffering is necessary to find meaning. And meaning is possible even without suffering also.To suffer unnecessarily is masochistic rather than heroic.
  • burden of unavoidable unhappiness is increased by unhappiness about being unhappy.
  • life has meaning up to the last moment, and it retains this meaning literally to the end.
  • Some people who call psychiatrist, often refuse to be handed over to a clergy man and and instead confront the doctor with questions such as, "What is the meaning of life".
  • The more a man tries to demonstrate his sexual potency or a women her ability to experience orgasm, the less they are able to succeed. Pleasure is, and must remain, a side effect or by product and is destroyed and spoiled to the degree to which it is made a goal in itself.
  • When her attention was refocused toward the proper object, i.e, the partner, orgasm established itself spontaneously.
  • Paradoxical intention, on the twofold fact that fear bring about that which one is afraid of, and that hyper-intention makes impossible what one wishes.
    • if you sweat in front of  people, then show them how much you can sweat.
    • if you are sleepless, try to remain awake as much as you can
    • if you can't write neat, write the worst possible you can.
  • Every human being has the freedom to change at any instant.
  • Freedom and Responsibility are two sides of same coin. The statue of Liberty on east coast should be supplemented with statue of responsibility on the west coast.
  • Say yes to life inspite of everything. Life is potentially meaningful under any conditions, even those which are most miserable.
  • Optimism is not anything to be commanded or ordered. One cannot even force oneself to be optimistic.
  • Happiness cannot be pursued, it must be ensue. One must have a reason to be happy. Once the reason is found, however, one becomes happy automatically.
  • 90% of alcoholics and 100% of drug addicts had suffered from an abysmal feeling of meaninglessness.
  • There is no reason to pity old and disabled but instead young and fit people should envy them.
  • How could you write in German inspite of what you have suffered: How could you use knives in kitchen inspite of it being used for millions of murders around the world.
  • One may howl with wolves, if need be, but when doing so, one should be, I would urge, a sheep in wolf's clothing.
  • don't be a parrot who rehash their masters voice, but do innovate and be your own version.
  • everything great is just as difficult to realize as it is rare to find.
  • For the world is in a bad state, but everything will become still worse unless each of us does his best.
  • Jan 27, 2006: first international Holocaust Remembrance day.
  • The quest for meaning is the key to mental health and human flourishing.

Are you constantly exhausted, feeling like you are paddling against the current? I recently watched a powerful TEDx talk that challenges the modern obsession with "hustle culture." ❌ Upstream Effort Paddling fiercely against the current.  Main Points from the Biography Sadness is a global phenomenon and everlasting one. It need seperate and deep study Belief creates division. You isolate into a group either to protect from other group or to dominate over other group. Organised religions are rooted in divisive tendencies. All the holy texts leads you to blind beliefs and rituals. It's better to stay away from it. You can't learn anything from texts or others. Stop Doubting Yourself and Go After What You Really, Really Want

💖 Self-Doubt & Self-Love Stop Doubting Yourself and Go After What You Really, Really Want Source: Mario Lanzarotti  |  TEDxWilmington ❤️ The One-Line Takeaway Self-doubt is not a defect to eliminate, but a signal that we need more self-love—something we can respond to by sharing our doubts, accepting ourselves, and forgiving our past. In this heartfelt talk, Mario Lanzarotti reframes self-doubt in a radical way. Instead of seeing it as an enemy that must be destroyed, he presents it as a misunderstood friend—a voice that appears whenever our self-love tank is running low. Rather than chasing a fantasy of being “fearless,” this perspective invites a softer courage: to share our doubts, to stay connected ...
